I had a total hysterectomy some years ago and take HRT, 4 pumps ofoestro-gel daily. No progesterone!
I’ve noticed a slow (until recently) change in my hair, both in texture and thickness taking place over the past year. However, this change has escalated significantly in the past month. The hair loss has been dramatic.
Also its texture, it no longer looks or feels like my hair. It is lifeless, thin and looks dry and porous. I’m devastated!!! The quality of my hair has always been admired and regularly commented upon.
I’ve been in shock about it the sudden sharp deterioration despite my taking collagen liquid – hydrolysed. Taking for a long time now.
I’m currently waiting on a GP appointment to get bloods done –specifically I want to check my thyroid, hormones, B12 and iron levels. Anything you can do to help me would be so appreciated.
The loss of hair is whole head but primarily on the whole crown.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Thank you for your questions.
Thanks for emailing. I haven’t tried PRP, but I’ve heard the results are not particularly impressive, although it does seem like a good idea.
If you’ve noticed the change in your hair since beginning HRT, it’s likely linked to that because almost all hair growth and hair health changes are related to hormones and inflammation.
There are three main ways to increase hair growth and health:
- You can use something like the Growth Factors serum, which boosts hair growth by increasing the signals in the hair follicles that literally ‘tell’ the hair to grow (via chemical signaling pathways) and increase the growth factor VEGF, which signals to the cells to build more of the circulatory structures that feed and grow the hair.
- You can reduce stress and inflammation — stress and inflammation cause an increase in inflammatory cytokines around the hair follicles which send chemical signals that tell the hair to stop growing. You notice this when your hair texture goes from healthy to brittle. This is also often caused by a change in hormones and is extremely common.
- You can change or block the hormones that cause the first two problems. This is more difficult because those hormones you’re blocking are needed for other important tasks in the body. This option tends to have side effects.
So my approach is a combination of 1 and 2. Use the Growth Factors serum to boost hair growth and health and reduce stress and inflammation by taking time every day to relax and by consuming anti-inflammatory foods and supplements. This is a pretty good solution in my view, although results can be quite slow.
Another solution is to get a hair transplant, but this is also a little tricky — especially if you want to increase your hair density rather than bring your hairline forward. Even if you were to go for a hair transplant I would still strongly encourage you to use something like the Growth Factors serum, to practice daily calmness, exercise daily and reduce inflammation through diet/supplements.
