I have keloid scars, mainly from my teens and twenties from acne and a couple of cuts that healed too rapidly. Would this put me at risk with the weekly rolling?
Actually, the Dermaroller is specifically designed to heal scars like this. That’s one of the reasons it is an effective tool for generating new hair, because with each roll, it breaks down scarred tissue and provokes the generation of fresh new tissue. Sometimes the new tissue contains a new follicle (which is a naturally occurring element of skin). As a result, using the Dermaroller and the Growth Factors serum can cause the generation of new follicles — this is called hair follicle neogenesis and there are quite a lot of studies on it now.
This is also why it’s an effective treatment for ‘scarring alopecia’, which is quite a common form of hair loss caused by ‘fibrosis’ or scarring of the follicles. When the follicles become scarred due to inflammation, which is often caused by high levels of DHT and even stress (stress causes an increase in inflammatory cytokines), they become damaged until they can no longer produce hairs. This is actually quite a common form of hair loss. In order to treat it, we have to use a device like a Dermaroller in order to gradually break down the scarred non-functional follicles and replace them with new healthy follicles.
