When you use the Dermaroller you create tiny wounds in the skin. As a result, the skin is forced to heal the wounds. The result of this is an increase in the types of processes that are involved in the generation of a new hair follicle. However, a new hair follicle is far more likely to be generated in the wound site if particular growth factors, such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) are increased in the wound site. Growth factors like VEGF create chemical signals in the skin, which increase the likelihood of a brand new hair follicle being generated. This phenomenon is quite well studied and is known as hair follicle neogenesis.
